How fortunate I am to live in an area where revved up dirt bikes scaling the trails behind our houses, or subwoofer speakers pounding repeated annoyance, are totally nonexistent.

The occasional howl of coyotes, hooting owls, Amtrak train whistles, and the fog horns from the Carquinez Strait are part of a beautiful evening melody. These bring such a comforting end to an otherwise noisy and hectic day.

Richard, send the coyotes to my hills.

Dear Gary:

When I was walking my dog this morning I heard crows cawing overhead. One crow was attempting to land on top of a utility pole. Every time he tried to land a strong wind gust walloped him in the face. He just hung in the air, his wings flapping. Then, I’m not kidding, he backed up a few feet.

The gust would subside a bit and he then went forward to the pole, only to be repelled when another gust hit. He finally gave up after several tries. I thought hummers were the only birds that could fly backward, but my Internet research reveals that many birds can fly backward relative to the ground in a strong headwind.
